ABOUT SHARK MITIGATION SCIENCE

Welcome to Shark Mitigation Science. This website is dedicated to providing evidence-based insights into shark-bite mitigation measures. The mission is to share knowledge from published, peer-reviewed research, enabling the public to make informed decisions about their ocean safety.

At the core of our content lies a curated review and meta-analysis of all peer-reviewed studies that have assessed shark-bite mitigation measures. This analysis serves as a central resource for understanding the effectiveness of deterrents, repellents, personal protective equipment (PPE), and area-based measures in enhancing human safety. We present the complex science of shark-bite mitigation in an accessible and easy-to-understand format.

The aim extends beyond academia to community outreach and education. We aim to bridge the gap between scientific research and public understanding by offering educational talks on shark safety and awareness.

The purpose of this site is to equip individuals with evidence-based knowledge. Whether you're interested in understanding the effectiveness of existing measures or seeking insights into the latest research, the goal is to provide you with the information you need. We invite you to explore our content, engage in discussions, and join us on the journey towards fostering a well-informed community focused on shark safety.

About

My lifelong fascination with humans and sharks sharing the ocean has fueled my dedication for shark-bite mitigation research. I embarked on this journey during my undergraduate studies in Marine Biology at Flinders University and have continued through my honours and PhD research.

Throughout my academic endeavours, I've assessed a diverse range of shark mitigation measures, ranging from electric and magnetic deterrents to smell-based solutions, bite-proof wetsuit materials, and aerial surveillance techniques. I've undertaken a comprehensive review and meta-analysis, curating studies focused on shark-bite mitigation measures which focus on keeping humans safe.

Join me to explore the dynamic relationship between humans and sharks, where science meets safety. I aim to use evidence-based knowledge to foster a greater understanding of shark-bite mitigation for the benefit of the future of our shared oceans.
